Somewhere Among Painted Constellations

They picked us To go back A suicide Type of contract Here we stay Finding clues A city dead Through and through This city crawls Up my skin Stretching on Without an end Into it's heart We will delve Unafraid Can't you tell? (Pre-Chorus) Back home, I've heard tales Of a place, where demons dwell (Chorus) But in the ruins I'll remain With stone cages broken My cool betrayed We knew what We signed up for A barren world Of empty grandeur Welcomes us With crossed arms Over a bridge That's heavily charred (Pre-Chorus) (Chorus x2) Betrayed I've been betrayed Betrayed I will betray
2.
Something scurries Something in the shadows Something hurries Something real I suppose There's something in the shadows (Something in the shadows) Something scurries in the shadows (Something in the shadows) Playing tricks on my mind It all plays tricks on my mind Playing tricks on my mind It all plays tricks on my mind I can't stand it Ever since we landed on this planet Been trying to understand it (Repeats) Ever since we landed on this planet Been trying
3.
Heard they found it With the knowledge Of the old tongue Relevant no more And in the center Signs of metal Twisted together In the shape of a bat It was well traveled In this city Well so are we From the same view Aluminum wings Alphabet teeth Tomes at its feet Like the one we need What does it mean? What does it mean? Captain won’t tell us Scribe has got a hunch And with a gentle touch Knows enough to give a heads-up Map of the stars But we won’t go far Won’t get to depart It’s a planet-side chart What does it mean? How did they paint the sky so long ago? Mastered the lights, as such simple folk The captain knows, but he won’t tell We’re left in the dark, chasing our own tails What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? Remains to be seen Oh it remains to be seen
4.
We have a heading Get the ship ready I'll load the fuel Scrape off the scallops We'll make a stew He said we're leaving Well I'd like to believe The mission's over This is our last stop That won't' be true The course is charted To where the heart is Beating strongly The signal's calling To me and you Our crew is prepared For what lies in there We'll find out soon Until then kick back Just try to relax Nothing you can do
5.
Do you ever think how it must look, to people like them? Climbing into this shiny machine, seconds later nowhere to be seen. To us it's just our lives, something we do every day. Normalized miracles, "one of their greatest feats made feeble." Looking up and saying, "now that is where I want to be." Here we go again Here we go again Another happy liftoff
6.
We've been jumping from rock to rock Searching for this spot And once we find it We'll return as heroes Ya know Well this time could be it Captain's always so glib But I'm inclined to believe him When he says this is the place A stale take (Chorus) Maybe, some day we'll see How each of our kids have grown Until then, we'll dream again Of the wonderful bouquet of home The freshest space-baked pies Flowers plucked from moon seven-nine You can only find it here In our memories They come free These brittle nutrient bars Can't compare to a meal in the park Under a crying tree To dowse us in shade A great aid (Chorus) The incomparable bouquet of home The stimulating bouquet of home The familiar bouquet of home
7.
700 MPH 04:06
Did you see it? On our way there Even greater ruins Climbing ten thousand feet into the air Did you feel strange? Reading the signs I know that I did Like we resurrected another time Did you hear them? Cry for help No me neither My mind keeps playing tricks on itself (Chorus) Landscapes stretch on When will this trip be through Haven't touched down in so long Could use a stretch, how 'bout you? Did you catch that? About the clouds They aren't water But thick fumes that form a deadly shroud Did you watch us? Pass those fields Hundreds of craters They weren't keeping their eyes peeled Did you remember? What HQ said They promised us This place has long since been dead (Chorus)
8.
I found just what I'm looking for A perfect match it's a bat not the bad sort I found just what I'm looking for Need I say more, need I say more
9.
Staring down the aftermath When things got ugly in seconds flat We got out in the end But was it worth pulling this thread Cause now a close friend is dead We called his name, the scribe shook his head Didn't even get what we came here for Should've trusted my gut when we kicked down that damn door Each of us under oath that we had vowed Venturing into those hallowed grounds But there was nothing holy in what we found A nest of horrors in both sight and sound They waited to strike until we were inside Caught the navigator by total surprise Dragged him deep into the depths of hell I can still hear the screams and how they swell We barely made it out with a story to tell Man, I'd never seen a company turn so pale How can he say there's a lesson here? Just a few deaths and some blood spilled Now that we've a new lead everyone should cheer Walking up to me and his hand extends
10.
Rest of Us 02:42
We’re getting real fed up With the false promise proclaiming Journal’s burnt, journey brings the hurt Neither delivers what should be contained within We’ve come too far to give up now Know we aren’t doing this for you It’s everybody else so far away Directly in the path we can’t move (Pre-Chorus) So I’m calling on you to listen, and I’m counting on you to understand, cause Somewhere deep down you’re a human Who factors into all the same plans (Chorus) As the rest of us With the rest of us You’re with the rest of us The worst and best of us The rest of us You stand with the rest of us And maybe there’s a reason You act the way that you do Well we’ve all got our inner demons But nobody’s suffered quite like you, well I just lost my best friend A death in our shoddy family And the weight on our shoulders Makes this the last place we want to be (Pre-Chorus) (Chorus x2)
11.
Eagle-Eyed 03:13
I sure wasn't in a hurry Not yet ready to move on But I can't stay here forever Wouldn't be fair to you all (Chorus) I'll tell you what I'm looking for Someone who's eagle-eyed Marooned on a distant shore With a rescue I'll never find Gone digging through the evermore Not gonna look that close inside I'll tell you what I'm looking for Maybe there's peace and quiet If not for me then someone else You'd need good sight to try and find it My misty eyes will be no help (Chorus)
12.
Sometimes I forget Sometimes I forget What it's like Out here Sometimes I forget Sometimes I forget That we're stuck Fighting off our fears (Chorus) And we've all got Different reasons for being here Yeah we've all got Different reasons for being here Sometimes I forget Sometimes I forget That we all fall Deep into despair Sometimes I forget Sometimes I forget This burden of mine Ain't alone to share (Chorus) What made you think it would be easy To forget about what you're leaving? Well I've got My own reasons for being here And you've got Your own reasons for being here We've all got Different reasons for being here
13.
Kind 06:10
A different kind of light Bends through the air A different kind of heat From that sun over there A different scale of time Makes minutes feel like months A different kind of light Reflecting through us all At some ancient juncture The hardest choice was made To leave it all behind Or buckle under the weight All which is strange Feels familiar At one with both our past And my coming future They devised a plan To scatter to the stars With answers left behind here For this landscape to guard We will never find them Without some of their help The X that marks the spot A rusty tool in their belt One group mastered tides One built castles in the red sands Some find refuge within storms Inhospitable to man I'll seek each of them out And I'll do it on my own Join me if you'd like On this voyage unknown
14.
The first stop in our search Lead us to a chalky desert Everything has been preserved Except where marine life emerged The distance far, much too wide Can't bridge across this divide The water's still, the sky is calm It's hardly like a sea at all Sailing the lunar maria Drifted across every ocean Wasn't like what we were hoping Been empty for such a long time So little here to capture the mind We'll move on to the next point But leave behind signs of our exploits When the next group wanders over They'll think about earlier owners Sailing the lunar maria
15.
Met with more hostility Than I'd maybe hoped to see I know we haven't reached out in a while But if we could just agree Our ancestors were absentee Maybe we could talk about our problems Instead you opened fire Despite circumstances dire So we couldn't reconcile Just flee Don't think that I cannot tell You all hide behind your shells I don't just mean your armadillo ships Impervious to damage dealt From the attacks we expel Time to rethink the point of this Because you opened fire Despite circumstances dire So we couldn't reconcile Just flee
16.
i. Fowl Circumstances After so many failures (Gonna do whatever it takes) And every broken promise (Until we finally break) Left with one last shot To give it all we've got Coming in to focus Can make out stations below us Nestled in the clouds Where storms are abound Deftly navigate Through a haze of phosphate Landing nice and easy Don't know we were hit by something we can't see Why do we always lose There's still time but what can we do? Better get used to living in this place Where radiation has doomed us to retire in disgrace There's something fowl in the atmosphere Can hardly breathe or see a damn thing in here With each breath my lungs sting and swell, oh The scars they wear will never heal ii. Down-To-Jupiter Folk These distant kin are a real hardy bunch Say if we don't pull our weight Better sprout wings when we fly away Share a laugh, I force it out Because it's funny But I can't stop thinking about The salt between their teeth (Chorus Repeats) Distant kin are a hardy bunch Better pull your weight or fly away iii. Barely Scraping By See me head in to town I'm feeling down Barely scraping by Every spare second I get Spent working on it Running out of time Need to Stretch My legs Break Outta This cage Break outta This cage (Chorus Repeats) I'm barely, I'm barely, I'm barely Scraping by (Got to get a move on) (Break outta this cage) Got to get a move on...
17.
Ponytail 02:05
It's been so long My hair has grown so long I don't want to shave it off Don't want to show it off To anyone Tuck that ponytail away I can't get away There's nowhere to go I've somewhere to go It'll have to wait It'll have to wait How long must I wait? All we do is wait
18.
Moon Jumpers 03:13
Overheard some idle chat About "over there and back" Apparently they have a way to leave Call themselves moon jumpers How have I never heard Or seen a profession so obscene (Chorus) Beneath the rock and ice Ocean drilling is quite precise Offshore there you'll find The ones who can help you for the right price The ride was short and sweet On Callisto I'd die for some heat I've been told about cold just like this Looking out from an icy bluff Heard these guys are pretty gruff I guess they'd bet I can't handle it (Chorus)
19.
When I arrived at the doorstep They weren't mineral mining Or doing anything terribly crazy They were wasted and whining Welcomed me to their messy abode And offered me a drink How could I do that, at a time like this When there's so much at stake? My crew ain't from around here It's hardly a surprise Our ship was damaged quite badly I heard you could give us a ride Well if it's money you want We'd give you all that we have One turns to the other and smiles Then turning back to me shaking his head Do ya know why we go by these names Ridiculous as they may be? We aren't in it for fortune or fame It's the thrills of living we seek Mad Hog and Bad Dog We'll let you decide who is who Mad Hog and Bad Dog Because we haven't a clue!
20.
Yeah we can get you home It won't be easy you know Might have to break a few bones An elaborate heist Planned over three nights Mad Hog and Bad Dog do it right (x3) Have you ever hijacked a volcano It's something you've got to take real slow We'll be sneaking 'round Io (Mad Hog and Bad Dog do it right) So let's keep this one on the down low
21.
Do you ever stop to think about All the space debris floating around Where it came from Where it will end up That asteroid looks just like A nose picking in eternal flight As such comparisons go It's rather crude I know But can we really tell The importance within each belt Some may be as ancient As we are young Like the core of a dead sun Or snot from a nearby god
22.
In the presence of this place A thousand hopes and dreams Remain I've been praying for this day and Nothing can take it away Something robust as fairy dust All of this time kept it up When we're inside what will we find Can it save mankind? And don't you dare say it's not there After all of this it must
23.
Did you hear what it had to say A tough choice but it'll be okay Did you hear what the Captain said Crazy and selfish well we didn't come all this way for him Or you, or me We're on behalf of an entire species Or did you all happen to forget That we would get home and find nothing left This thing can save us, all of us yes I think we know what question is best What question is best (Chorus Repeats) I feel it calling to me I feel it coming for me I feel it calling to me I feel it, I feel it (It's tempting, it's tempting)
24.
If we could set aside our egos If we could stop and think about this Consider carefully what we stand to gain And all the people that we would forsake You argue that it's too late But we don't know for sure You may keep at bay The memories while wide awake At night they'll come clawing back for more (Chorus) Years spent among the stars Cradling your ego's fragile repertoire Well I won't fall for it I'm through with playing your politics After years spent among the stars Cradling your ego's fragile repertoire Well I won't fall for it I'm through with playing your politics (Chorus)
25.
Not in Vain 02:56
Thinking back to sitting on that platform The last train waiting to close its doors Do I really want to go through with this I could stay home and safely exist Stomach growled when I heard a man Behind me offer up his name and Shared his snack 'cause he was hungry too Said "Looks like I'm head to the same place as you" Over the long ride we got to talking Eased each other's fears over our options So when we got there, felt more prepared To tackle all the trials that we shared Surely this mission would be like the others Easy in and out, save it all and retire But you never second guess a bad call Well I won't say who that fate oughta befall (Chorus Repeats) I said stop thinking about How you can't go back and shut it down If you don't think this out Then your position will be renounced
26.
We've been camped out here Been waiting to hear From the machine And the relief it will bring Pitched tents in the clearing Chatting anxiously With our ears peeled To receive our end of the deal After so much waiting That's all we do Wait and hope it comes true
27.
Can't please everybody Who don't want what you want They still won't listen to reason It's time we left them in the dust And completed our mission For the ones who believed in us Wasn't what I wanted to hear But it'll have to be enough
28.
How far away am I From breaking in these eagle-eyes I thought we’d be in range by now But I haven’t heard a single sound I tell them not to worry about This growing concern dragging me down Everything’ll be okay when we get there Lost the plot but I haven’t lost the way I’ll get us home if it takes a hundred days Treating this like it’s a one man race Helps keep time from falling into disarray Just how long have we been in flight Will anyone there remember what we look like? Things might be different beyond Recognizing if they’ve gone wrong Can such a long night have a dawn? One long night (I’m sorry, so so sorry) One long night (I’m sorry, so so sorry) One long night (I’m sorry, so so sorry) One long night (I’m sorry, so so sorry) Maybe we’re not cut out for it But try our best to turn it around There’s no time to give up or quit Can’t always move to a new town Our future depends on if We can convince them to change now Switching gears, making a change now Switching gears, making a change now Switching gears, making a change now Switching gears, making a change now

This Farm 02:41
Down here on the farm I seek a simple day away From the biting hurt With my dirt on the farm Tilling soil as I toil In the fields dripping sweat That isn't yet on the farm Nobody but me will see The land that I've tamed When I claimed this farm No one can say That others trust me with their fate I am alone Free of the adventure bone show No Captain here At last it's my own ship to steer Don't have to think Anymore of running extinct It's all in the past I tried my best to change the forecast Now I'm out And I'd say it once aloud But I'm betrayed

about

This album had a funny life cycle. It's amongst the fastest I've ever written (all in one month, as part of last years 'Songtober'), and it's the longest I've ever spent on the production and refining side of things. I chipped away at the initial recordings over the course of half a year. Before this, the longest I'd spent working on recordings for one album was about 3 weeks. I really do think this is reflected in the upgrade of quality from previous releases. I still have so much to learn about production, but it's nice to see I'm improving.

This is a concept album, along the lines of a rock opera, telling the story of of a group of volunteer explorers sent to the outer reaches of the galaxy. They are in search of a solution to a threat that, unanswered, will result in the extinction of their species. After years of travel they wind up in a familiar solar system on a familiar, long abandoned planet. A planet that, hopefully, holds what they seek. If you would like to know more about the story, you can click on each song title for further reading!

If you purchase the album, you'll receive additional artwork that serves as an alternate album cover, and use whichever you prefer (this second cover will also be viewable on my Spotify page once the second half of the album goes up).
